The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where individuals with low ability in a domain overestimate their competence, while those with high ability underestimate their skills.

We hear two things often-

Im a 600 and I am playing people who play perfect moves all the time and I lose. So many cheaters. There are cheaters and you are a 600.

"Then we hear, I hang pieces all the time, its so frustrating, I hardly know anything about chess."

"Me too, what's your rating?"

"1894."

"Im 750."

.....

You are what your rating says, if you are over 800 you are a diety to most people who play a few times a year.

If you are600 you have a ways to go

If you are over 1200 you are elite
