Next Step for home server

Hi,

Crosspost from r/HomeServer not sure whether I'm in the right place 🙂 I added another reply from me since it contains more questions / information.

A few months ago I set up a nextcloud Pi as my first own server. The main reason is getting away from Big Tech and the server is one big part of that plan. The setup is a raspberry Pi 5, 2TB SSD Storage und 2 TB HDD Backup. The storage is shared between 2 users.

We currently use it for Storage (WebDAV on Linux, macos, home assistant for backups, android and iOS), photos, caldav and contacts. We reach it via dyn DNS and open ports.

Everything works really great and very smooth. My thoughts on upgrading:

- Neither the SSD nor the HDD are designed for 24/7

- I think I set the dyn DNS stuff up in a safe way but there is a little bit of doubt whether I'm vulnerable to attacks from outside

- in the future I want to do more with the system (stream music and video maybe, I would like to try Immich)

- I would feel better with a Raid 5 or even 6/10. At the moment we make a 100% backup every night on the HDD and keep 5 of those).

Now I am struggling between some options. I would love to still use Nextcloud. Maybe you can help me decide:

  1. NAS from "a big manufacturer" with HDDs that are designed for 24/7. My main concern with that is the dependency on "a big manufacturer" for the online access to the system. Of course I could just ditch everything from "a big manufacturer" but why pay the price then?
  2. Mini PC with external drives, preferably DAS and ZimaOS. I took a look at ZimaOS and I realy liked it. If I choose a decent DAS the price is about "a big manufacturer" level but with higher performance from the mini PC.
  3. Keep Raspberry and upgrade it. I have not really looked into that. Should I?

Any idea on that or other suggestions?

Thanks!

The big manufacturer is the one from China.

Now I’ve got even more questions than before, though.

Why is Nextcloud considered insane? Running it on a Pi, or in general? Maintenance is minimal (so far), and the Pi’s fan is off about 95% of the time. Or is Nextcloud just not the right tool in your opinion? Honestly, I’m still pretty new to all this…

I was a bit shocked by the price and performance of the system you suggested 😃 Is that really necessary? I’ve seen plenty of NAS devices with 8 GB RAM and a small CPU that supposedly run Immich and other stuff just fine (maybe thats marketing and in reality it runs terrible). My original plan was a 300-400 € mini PC (16 GB RAM) + a 100–200 € DAS with 4x4 TB IronWolf HDDs (each around 170 €). [€ ≈ USD]
