I have been in tech for 23 years. I have been using AI for last three. My AI workflows are for analysis and dev at enterprise level. Like serious enterprise level. I have my own chat gpt subscription, plus github copilot with claude via my company.
I am seeing a lot of posts in these forums about layoffs because of AI and a lot of doom and gloom.
Layoffs are a sad reality. I have been through 2 in 2009 and 2010. Absolutely sucks. But bear in mind AI is not the culprit. It is not that capable. It is a math function which is perdicting what will come next based on what has happened before. It is not intelligent nor sentient in the truest meaning of the word.
People see basic level stuff being done with AI and their minds are blown. If you are a copy writer or are doing small websites, or may be doing basic level graphics, you will feel threatened, and you should.
But when it comes to business problems, crm, integration with financial systems such as sap, BC, or OF, complex game programming, you cant write a prompt like "Be done" and expect it to be magically done. Does not happen. And wont ever happen. This "be done" kind of narrative that is being pushed is the real frustration.
In real business scenarios, complex mapping and transformation of data is invloved. AI can may be help it being done ar 1.5 times at most, and it still requires a review.
So my advice is learn, adapt, evolve but dont believe in dooms dayers.
Lastly it is a recession that is on us. It is not being acknowledged. Couple that with ME war and overhiring in pendemic, this much layoff was bound to happen. I pray for all effected and hope no one else including me gets effected.
