TLDR: to upgrade or not to upgrade the 3rd gen Tacoma? That is the question
My partner and I currently own a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-road short bed, 6speed MT, with old man EMU lift kit, steel front bumper, open-road 270 awning, ARE canopy, and universal prinsu rack over the shell. We don't do extremely technical trails but like to be nimble enough to get to remote areas. My partner uses a CPAP to sleep and I need a small fridge to keep my insulin (type 1 diabetic) and psoriatic arthritis medication cold. For power, we currently use a jackery 1500 with solar panels and need to recharge it every 2-3 days, which limits our trips significantly. Otherwise, our kit is pretty basic with cooler, tent, exped duo mattress, sleeping bags etc. We are not small people and have 2 dogs so typically we need gear that sleeps 3-4.
We'd really like to streamline things for longer time off grid, easier camp setup/take down, and more organized storage. We're leaning toward something like the Alucab modcap family camper with solar panel and lithium battery dc to dc system of some sort (tbd). We're also upgrading the suspension on our current vehicle (light duty OME wasn't enough on our last trip).
HOWEVER, campers are expensive and I don't want to drop a bunch of cash on a truck that mayyy not have THAT much life left in it? The Tacoma is in great shape, has 74k miles on it, and I know tacomas last forever, but this camper is going to cost as much as the truck is worth when's all said and done and the campers aren't easily transferable between trucks.
If I have the money to do it, should I trade in the Tacoma for a 4th gen TRD off road or even a Tundra?
