First time building a desk (and I didn’t pick the simplest concept).

I want to build a desk that can close down into a table. I attached a picture of the inspiration I found online but is way outside of my price range.

My question is, what type of material/wood is best for the actual desk part? I need something that can be cheap, but still sturdy to be able to sustain the weight of my laptop and 2 monitors attached to the upper part. I figure I can find someone to build me so legs out of some sort of metal. Any suggestions?

Also, it’s imperative I make a desk with a closing lid due to my living conditions in a cramped space (needs to double as a table) with pets (who would jump up on it if left unclosed).

TLDR: what is the best wood material and specs to try and DIY a replica of the desk pictured.

Any advice is appreciated!
