Goal of moving to Canada/USA within 5-10 years:

Hi everyone,

I’m currently 19, based in the UK, and I’ve just secured a Degree Apprenticeship with KPMG (Audit) starting in September. My absolute long-term goal is to move to the Canada or the USA by age 25-27. I’m very flexible— I would be willing to work wherever the demand is in North America…

Qualification: I’ll be finishing AAT Level 3/4 and then moving onto the ACA (Chartered Accountant) qualification.

My Current Plan:

  1. Qualify as a Chartered Accountant (ACA).
  2. Maintain high performance ratings (PZ 1 or 2) to request an internal L-1B transfer to a US office or an internal transfer to Canada.

As a Plan B, I might apply for the IEC Working Holiday Visa for 2 years and since there are no costs for the firm or much paperwork (I don’t think)— it could work?

Questions:

  1. How soon after qualifying (ACA) is the best time to request a North American transfer?

  2. Does having the IEC visa in hand actually make a Big Four firm more likely to facilitate a transfer, or do they prefer doing the paperwork themselves?

  3. Is the L-1B "Specialized Knowledge" visa the best bet for an auditor, or should I be looking at other routes?
