Tips to Quit
This is just a short post with what helped me (25M) and what I think could help others kick the zyn habit. I am on day 179 (of no nicotine) right now so basically 6 months.
Tip 1: Don’t pick a specific date to quit or say something along the lines of “I’ll quit as soon as I run out.” We all know how this goes. You just keep pushing back the deadline and keep staying addicted. If you throw away a half-full can right now, you already have shown enough discipline to never pick another one back up. Procrastinating quitting will get you know where fast.
Tip 2: Gum, gum, gum, and more gum. I used peppermint zyns and used the same flavor gum when quitting. Having that similar spicy tingle in your mouth 100% helps. I even would stop chewing gum and just set it where a zyn would be, which really helped me.
Tip 3: You gotta exercise or somehow distract yourself. I starting running and picked up sports again and the sheer effort and sweet not only helps take your mind off of quitting, but helps build discipline.
Tip 4: HAVE A REASON. This might not apply to everyone, but I would imagine most people on this thread trying to quit have a reason to do so. Mine was because it was giving me severe nerve pains in my left side. Your reason could be to save money or just to be healthier. Whatever the reason is, find it, and figure out in your head why your reason is more important than your addiction.
Note: this is not a tip and I probably wouldn’t recommend to everyone, but I keep a full can of zones (different type of zyn) in my desk where I work all day. For me this is part of the discipline side of quitting. I know it’s there, but I have to actively chose not to take one every day. When I first started, I feel like this made quitting harder, but I also think it helped instill the right mindset in my brain of knowing that I’ll never need another.
