Root Keeps Taking Over Folder

Hello!

I'm fairly new to Linux, so feel free to explain as if I'm a very dumb child ...

I'm using my Ubuntu 26.04 as a media server with Jellyfin. After a reboot, Jellyfin can no longer access my media drive because root keeps taking ownership of a folder in the path - specifically: /run/media/justin

I do a chown and change ownership to justin:justin and set permissions to allow access and everything works great ... I reboot and owner is changed back to root:root

How do I resolve this so I don't have to keep taking it over every time?

Ubuntu RDP Session Fails without Monitor Connection

Hello!

Setup: I have a Linux Mint desktop that I am using to RDP (via Remmina) to a media server that is running Ubuntu 26.04. The media server has no peripherals connected.

Problem: The RDP connection fails unless I plug a monitor into the Ubuntu media server. Once connected, I have zero issues and can RDP as expected. As soon as I unplug the HDMI cable the connection is killed. I cannot connect or reconnect if there is no monitor present.

How do I get around this? It's setup to just be a Jellyfin media server and I want it to just be the box and power - nothing else connected to it; and definitely no room for a monitor.

On the Ubuntu box I went to Settings -> System -> Remote Desktop -> Desktop Sharing and configured that to allow Sharing and Remote Control ... do I instead need to use the Remote Login option instead and disable Desktop Sharing?

Newb Help with Remote Desktop

Hello! I'm very new to Linux and am setting up a mini PC with Ubuntu to act as a media server. Since it won't have any devices connected, I want to be able to remote into it to adjust content, settings, etc.

I'm following the steps in Ubuntu's official documentation (Settings -> System -> Remote Desktop -> Desktop Sharing)

I've got Sharing and Remote Control on, but when I get to the Login Details, anything I enter isn't saved - if I browse away to other Settings and come back, Login Details is blank. If I try to remote from another computer using the info I had previously typed in, nothing happens ... so what am I missing? How do I save the Login Details?

I really dug the look of the Goliath Maulers and was hoping I could get the OG bike riders to fit ... and with only minimal effort was able to do so. Still a lot of work to go ... and have to pick up another Maulers kit since they only come as a duo 😞

Hello! I have a Razer Blackwidow keyboard and it unfortunately has that twisty-knob in the upper-right that adjusts volume. On Windows, through Synapse, I could remapp or disable keys on the keyboard and so I would turn off the knob as it's VERY sensitive and the slightest movement causes the sound to go up or down.

Since Razer isn't fully integrated with Linux (I can adjust RGB but no key remapping) I was wondering if there's a way to 'lock' the volume? I want to keep it at 25% and allow nothing to adjust it unless it's unlocked first (if that makes sense). That way if the wheel is turned, nothing happens.

Hello! First time Linux user and I'm running the latest Linux Mint (22.3) and trying to get everything setup - I'm primarily a gamer. I've installed CoolerControl to manage my fans and everything looks good except it doesn't recognize my Nvidia GeForce 4070 Ti fans ... it just says fan1 & fan2 at 0% and 0 RPM.

I tried looking at the CoolerControl FAQ but, honestly, it all reads like gibberish to me and as my card is a couple years old would assume it should be picked up automatically.

Can anyone help me through the steps to get the fans recognized? Or if there's a better fan control program, please recommend?

Thanks so much!

Hello! Longtime Windows user here (DOS, Win95 era) and finally made the plunge to Linux (specifically Bazzite).

I had a question around apps that don't "install" - for instance, I love the calendar app Rainlendar and I have to download it as a .tar.bz2 and then unzip it where I can run the executable ... but I don't see a way to install it in the traditional sense ... so two questions:

  1. I don't want this living in my Downloads folder - is there a recommended place to put apps like this?
  2. Is there a way to make it auto-start when I boot? Right now I have to launch it every time and it's a bit annoying.

Thank you!

Hello!

I'm trying to do a dual boot with Windows 11 and I'm following the video guide on the website (Mike's Tech Tips) to the letter.

When I restart and boot from my USB drive, I get the Grub menu, select the Bazzite installer and then immediately get the following error:

../../grub-core/disk/efi/efidisk.C:625:failure reading sector 0x61f00 from 'hd1'

I've downloaded the .iso twice to make sure it wasn't the file itself

Tried flashing the .iso with both Fedora Media Writer and balenaEtcher in case that was the issue

Ran a CHKDSK to make sure my c: is good (it is)

Any ideas?
