I could be mistaken, but it seems like in most of the photos and conversations, there's little evidence of using mulch. Did I not look closely enough, or is there a reason for this?

I just mulched a fig in ~15 gallon pot with straw. First, I added a little soil and fertilized with a low dose of slow release 13.13.13. I have a second fig in a similar pot that I didn't amend or mulch, so I can compare.

Any opinions on mulching? I'min 9b in the desert southwest.
