Graduate workers at the University of Illinois Chicago have been on strike for 5 days (as of May Day) after unsuccessfully bargaining for a fair contract with the university administration for just over a year. We have been working without a contract since August 2025. Graduate workers at UIC currently make $24,200 for 9-month appointments and have to pay hundreds of dollars in fees to attend every year in the city of Chicago, while other R1 universities in the city pay over $45,000 per year, in addition to nearly zero fees. The university is offering a 2% increase in wages (a $400 raise per year) and is proposing increasing the fees graduate workers have to pay.
