I'm a 40 year old male, 5'9" 230lbs @ diagnosis. A pretty severe sepsis infection led to my diagnosis Jan of this year. My doctor started me on Metformin. Here's some of the changes I made:
- Almost zero alcohol. Absolutely no beer. I'm still a sucker for a good whiskey but I've cut back significantly
- I cut out all Candies, sweets, juice, sugars and soda
- Keto bread was a big change. I've been really careful about the types of bread I've eaten. Occasionally I'll have whole wheat bread. The 'Inked' brand from Costco is really good.
- almost no beef. If I do have protein, it's usually a chicken, lean pork or tuna.
- Portion control has been huge
- No Rice, No Pastas. I make cauliflower rice, and spaghetti squash as substitutes
- 15-20 minute walks at least 3-4 days per week. I've started hiking regularly too.
- Staying positive is huge for me. It helps keep me focused on healthier habits
- Better hydration. This has also helped with portion control and feeling full.
Edit: I want to share my experience with others that you CAN do it. It's a crappy diagnosis to receive, but done the right way with the help of your doctor you can feel better and add years to your life. I'd love to hear others experiences and what works well for them. Have a great day all!!
