I’m graduating college in a couple days here, and I managed to get into my first choice for a police department. POST starts in July. I was told by the commander as well as a few other buddies I have in law enforcement that I’m going to have to “put the brakes on” when I’m at academy. For context, I’ve been training MMA for 2 years now or so, and been shooting competitively for 7. I’m A class in USPSA.

My question is, is any of my background experience going to be an issue at POST? I’ve never been egotistical, but I’m not sure if my background can cause issues due to already having personal biases and whatnot. An easy example I can think of: I have a slightly non traditional grip for when I shoot pistol, where my middle finger on my support is the finger under the trigger guard, not my index finger. Would I get in trouble for not having “proper grip” when we’re being taught how to shoot pistol?

I know this is kind of silly, but I just am curious what to expect at POST. Are they dead set in their ways with teaching techniques, or is there some leniency if they can tell someone has some experience. I’d appreciate any help!
