X is a senior individual contributor preparing to move to a competitor (financial services area). Current notice period is 3 months but looking to leave ASAP (spend time with family and reset ready for new role).
Has anyone successfully negotiated an early release in similar circumstances? Any advice on how best to approach the conversation would be hugely appreciated.

gardening leave vs 'early release' - seems GL most likely but any alternatives, even if there's a financial hit, but by mutual agreement. Unpaid parental leave perhaps?
Forgot to mention, immediate manager is dificult - would it be better to approach HR instead?
