I’m wondering what your experiences are with pi’s expectations for mentoring undergrads as a grad student. Backstory, my pi hired an undergrad to be in our lab full time, 40 hours a week for a semester. The idea is that this student is mentored by me full time. The thing is, this student has 0 lab experience at all, not even from courses and doesn’t know about any of the techniques we use. I have tight deadlines set by my pi, papers to put out, and my own thesis to write so having to backtrack and teach basics as been very difficult, much so that i come in on the evenings and weekends so i can get my own research done. My pi has also set very high expectations that this student would be doing very advanced experiments by the end of his semester here.
I’m wondering if anyone’s experienced something like this, and how you go about setting boundaries in situations like this?
