I built a dongle that turns any Trackball into a 3D Space Mouse. Honestly, I think it feels better than a joystick-style 3Dconnexion device.
Hi everyone,
I’ve always wanted a 3D mouse for my FreeCAD workflow, but I never quite liked the "joystick" or "knob" feel of the 3Dconnexion devices. I felt that a trackball offers much better tactile feedback and precision for 3D navigation.
So, I built a hardware solution called "TrackAhead."
It’s a USB-to-USB dongle that intercepts trackball signals and emulates 3Dconnexion HID data.
- Native Support: FreeCAD recognizes it immediately as a 3D mouse.
- No Drivers: Works plug-and-play without any background software.
- The Benefit: Unlike the spring-loaded tension of a 3D mouse knob, the trackball allows for effortless, infinite rotation and much finer control over the camera.
I’m really happy with how it performs in FreeCAD.
What do you think? Do you prefer the traditional joystick feel, or do you think a trackball could be the superior 3D navigation tool?
