Hi everyone,

I’ve always wanted a 3D mouse for my FreeCAD workflow, but I never quite liked the "joystick" or "knob" feel of the 3Dconnexion devices. I felt that a trackball offers much better tactile feedback and precision for 3D navigation.

So, I built a hardware solution called "TrackAhead."

It’s a USB-to-USB dongle that intercepts trackball signals and emulates 3Dconnexion HID data.

  • Native Support: FreeCAD recognizes it immediately as a 3D mouse.
  • No Drivers: Works plug-and-play without any background software.
  • The Benefit: Unlike the spring-loaded tension of a 3D mouse knob, the trackball allows for effortless, infinite rotation and much finer control over the camera.

I’m really happy with how it performs in FreeCAD.

What do you think? Do you prefer the traditional joystick feel, or do you think a trackball could be the superior 3D navigation tool?

Switching from Fusion 360 to FreeCAD: What am I missing?

Hi everyone, I’ve been using the Fusion 360 trial, but I want to migrate to FreeCAD for the long term because of the licensing costs. However, I’m struggling with the learning curve.

The other day, I tried to design a simple USB dongle case. After struggling in FreeCAD for a while, I gave up, hopped back into Fusion 360, and finished it in 15 minutes. It feels like I’m missing a fundamental concept that FreeCAD requires compared to Fusion.

Two main questions:

  1. For those who switched from Fusion 360, what is the most critical "mindset shift" or fundamental concept I need to grasp in FreeCAD?
  2. I’m really struggling with "Snap to Grid." I can’t seem to find a reliable setting for it, and it doesn't behave like I expect. What are your recommended settings for a snappy, intuitive grid experience?

Any advice or recommended workflows (Part Design vs. Part?) would be greatly appreciated!
