This piece provides an interesting summary of the egalitarian Zoroastrian movement of Mazdak. It highlights the ways many conservative Muslims opposed Mazdak's legacy. Yet the article also notes how some Islamic thinkers, such as Ali Shariati, embraced socialist ideas.

Manuel Mora Valverde was the founder of the Costa Rican Communist Party (later called Partido Vanguardia Popular), and was the main artificer of the social achievements of Costa Rica, such as public healthcare, workers rights and much more. He's a very interesting figure because he achieved his policies through an alliance with the government and (most importantly) the Costa Rican Catholic Church.

They would later be outlawed following the Costa Rican Civil War in 1948 until the 70s, where they would continue under a different name. Later, the party would rupture between Valverde and Arnoldo Ferreto over the issue of political participation vs revolution.

He was declared a benefactor of the nation by the government in 1998.
