Amazon Tree Boa Noises
Recently bought an Amazon tree boa. He’s a bit under a foot long and I have him in a starter enclosure with half the top sealed off, an automatic mister, cypress and moss bedding, heat emitter, a large water dish and multiple branches and plants. He’s been eating and behaving normally for the three weeks I’ve owned him.
Last night I noticed his mouth was open while he was under his heat emitter. I turned it off and his behavior returned to normal for the rest of the night. I believe it may have been a bit too hot. I’ve now ordered another lower wattage emitter and upped the humidity. I believe the humidity was on the low side before but not dangerously low according to my meters. I followed the setup recommendations of my local reptile shop.
His mouth is now closed, but when I hooked him today he’s made the faintest clicking noise. No nose bubbles or anything. Barely audible. He doesn’t do it when he’s moving around. He seems to be breathing fine. I called my vet and she said to monitor him for the weekend, and that since he was improving overall and not showing any real signs of illness yet it may not need antibiotics. She seemed to think it was early irritation opposed to a brewing infection. However I’m a bit nervous. Has anyone dealt with this before? He has no mucus, sneezing, lethargy, or anything like that.
Also the picture above was when I first added him to the cage prior to misting. His humidity generally sat between 60 - 70% but may have dipped down at night due to the 35W emitter. Kicking myself for this. This is my first non-basic snake and it’s been a steep learning curve on getting everything dialed in.
