Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on a severance package I’ve been offered and a negotiation I have coming up.
I’m based in Ontario and have been with my employer for just under 5 years in a full-time role. My employment is ending, and they’ve offered me 8 weeks of severance.
A few details:
- Continuous full-time employment
- No performance issues leading to termination
- Responsibilities increased over time
I’ll be speaking with the CRO to discuss this, and I’m trying to understand whether this offer is reasonable or if I should be pushing for more.
From what I’ve read, 8 weeks seems low for nearly 5 years of service, but I’m not sure what’s typical in Ontario, especially under common law vs ESA minimums.
Questions:
- Is 8 weeks in line with what I should expect, or is it low?
- What would be a more reasonable range to negotiate toward?
- Should I be asking for things like bonus payout, benefits continuation, etc.?
- Any tips for negotiating in this situation?
Appreciate any guidance or experiences others can share.
