Hi all,
I'm an Australian civil engineer with five years in the industry primarily with a background in flooding. I'm looking to pivot into mining engineering because I've come to appreciate the industry due to exposure via investing in mining producers and developers. Very keen to put in the hard yards to overcome the technical skill deficits, open to fifo and I'm not interested in mining for the sake of the salary.
At the moment, I've been unsuccessful with some graduate job applications (obviously no experience and have been out of university for 4+ years)
I was looking at doing the Curtain Diploma of Mining which cover the following courses:
Graduate Diploma of Mining - Course Outline, Curtain University
I've got the following questions:
How likely is it to get a job based on doing the diploma? The cost of the course is $35k so it's only worth it if there's a real chance of landing a job after. Civil engineering skills are definitely transferable (TSF etc) however without further study in the specific discipline, it becomes increasingly hard to get a job.
What other pathways would you recommend pursuing as a means of getting into the industry? I don't plan on going back to doing another four year engineering degree unless it's completely necessary.
In order to get my foot in the door, what roles should I be applying for?
