Permit help?
I’m going through a company to restore my kitchen after water damage. That scope of work is being covered my insurance.
Since the whole room had to be gutted, I’m using this opportunity to make a few updates since the whole room is gutted to the studs.
One of those improvement is removing a wall that divides the kitchen from the living room and having an island instead. Our water remediation company says they can handle this, and we got a quote to have this load bearing wall removed and supported with an engineered beam.
My concern is, they said it 100% doesn’t need a permit through the county. My family is very worried about that, and my brother in law who is a building inspector for the next county over says you 100% DO need a permit for the work.
We’ve run out of money after paying for the wall removal, can someone advise me on if a permit is necessary for this work? Am I screwing myself by following the contracting company’s guidance and waving that step?
FYI we did have a structural engineer come out and make up plans and run the math on what would be required to support that wall’s load.
Thank you everyone
