Newly pregnant employee too sick for work.
I own a small dog daycare with 8 employees. Last week one of my employees showed up to work complaining of stomach pain, dizziness, pain in her stomach. She said she didn’t know what was wrong but was unable to do her job. This continued for the rest of the week (she never told me, the rest of the staff did) and she varied between laying down most of her shift or leaving early. Did not want to go home but did agree to take off Friday.
Employee came in and shared she was pregnant on Monday of this week. Hooray! She said that is why she has been sick. She took off Tuesday and came in today and again she was sick and had to lay down for the first 2 hours of her shift.
I asked her about her schedule and she didn’t have any answers as to preferred shifts or taking time off etc. The hard part is that I don’t know I need to get her shift covered until she comes in, is sick, and leaves or can’t do her job.
I want to be accommodating but I also need to have a plan for staff. How do I handle a newly pregnant employee (she didn’t know her due date yet) while also making sure I’m properly staffed?
