Is there ever a good reason to leave a permanent position for a contract position?

I was a freelancer for about 15 years, did quite well, now I‘m enjoying the office and a team to call my own. The pay is a pittance, but I‘m grateful and satisfied.

HOWEVER, I‘ve received an offer that will quadruple my salary, and being me further in my career. Essentially I get to reign over my own AI landscape. For a big energy company too. The contract is only 2 years though.

I am on a good track with my current company, but I‘ll never get too far with them. Actually thats ok. The freelance rat race is stressful enough.

I‘m leaning decline the offer. What am I missing?
