At a large multinational company I used to work for, there was a guy who kept collecting a paycheck for about 4 years without having a job. He had just been hired, and simply put, the system forgot about him and no one noticed.
After about a week on the job, he found that no one was asking him to do anything - not to stack goods, not to drive a forklift, nothing. So he got a clipboard and a pen and started walking around the warehouse every night.
He would just keep walking around like that, pretending to take notes, and sometimes asking people about inventory updates. Most of us thought he was some quality control guy or someone from management. He just looked busy, you know what I mean?
This went on until the old manager of the second shift left and a new one came in. The new manager was trying to get to know his team, and one time he asked, "Who's that guy with the clipboard, and who does he report to?"
That one question unraveled the whole story. They found out he had no official position, no manager, nothing at all. All he was doing was showing up to work and acting important for years.
In the end, they appointed him to a real job, but I heard he resigned about a month later.
