Wondering what electricians, particularly employers of apprenticeships would make of seeing me as a candidate with profile below. I'm 32.
Background - Perth
Uni degree, double major, finance, accounting.
Taught self to code, worked as a systems/data analyst for autonomous mining truck productivity. Data analyst and software engineer in various businesses/operations.
All up about 8 years.
Good skills and experience, but seems like fighting a race to the bottom. Disruption of AI, competition from migrant workers as well as full offshoring of large portions of work in recent job. Sick of office environments, culture, politics. On top of the stress that already comes with being an engineer. Looking for a new career direction, alongside the goal of buying a house as soon as I've got the borrowing capacity (got the deposit) and meeting a long term partner on the way.
Electrician seems like a rewarding long term pathway with a lot to offer and job satisfaction if you know where you want to go and work for it. Being hands on is new to me but what I want. I've got the mind for problem solving and analyzing system like things. Strong with learning any theory/book stuff. Strong amateur athlete in personal time not concerned with physical stuff or exposure to elements. No alcohol/drugs etc. All the extra skills that come with professional work - organization, communication, emails, documentation, professionalism etc. The hard stuff for me is dealing with dickheads, can't stand them. Can be a bit of a loner type and not sure how much of an issue that is with this trade. Don't think I want to go near construction. Lastly taken a 1.5 year self funded career break and wondering how much of a barrier that will be.
Moving forward with this I'd do a pre-apprenticeship program in 2nd half of this year before applying for apprenticeship programs. I'd also knock off any tickets that could be useful.
Long-term I'm am interested in the industrial side of things, FIFO, resources, processes and getting on the instrumentation or HV pathway. Not sure how to navigate towards that. Can you get into apprentice programs or employers that are related to this or is it unrealistic? But also interested in data centers, cabling.
Anyway, if you saw me as a candidate in 6 months, post pre-apprenticeship and some tickets, with this background and outlook - what would the feedback be?
