i all,

I recently stumbled on something that’s been bugging my brain (in a good way), and I’d love your input.

There are two songs from very different contexts:

  • “Wolsik” by Tabu (featured in the indie animation There She Is!!)
  • “Just What I Need Tonight” by The Dinky Toys (I heard a cover by Sharon den Adel on the show Liefde voor Muziek)

At first I thought it was just a vague resemblance, but the more I listened, the more it felt like the similarity goes beyond just a shared chord progression.

What stands out to me:

  • A very similar build-up → emotional release structure
  • Comparable tempo and rhythmic feel
  • Long sections where the melodic phrasing and intensity curve feel almost parallel
  • That same kind of “held-back tension → explosive chorus” moment

It’s not a copy-paste situation, but the overlap lasts long enough that it doesn’t feel like a quick coincidence either.

I’m curious how you’d analyze this:

  • Are we just hearing a common pop structure used in a very similar way?
  • Could this come from similar chord progressions + arrangement choices?
  • Or is there something more specific going on (rhythm, melody contour, harmonic pacing)?

If anyone feels like going deeper (chords, structure, etc.), I’d love to hear your breakdown.

Here are the links:

  • Wolsik: [link]
  • Just What I Need Tonight (original / cover): [link]

Thanks!
