We recently had scaffolding put up on a flat which we were told about a week in advance, at 8am this morning almost a week and a half later I hear the gate in our private garden open and contractors were in our garden outside our bedroom window, my partner went outside and said we were expecting them and weren’t given any notice to which he rudely replied “you were.”So the conversation ended there.

This has been an issue in the past with the same contractors and they don’t seem to notify me or the letting agent when they are appearing, the told us they were informed 2 weeks in advance they were coming today, by who? Who knows, maybe the landlord?

I sent an email complaint to the letting agent as I always do, asking for 24 hours notice, and that it affects our privacy.

Just to give context to the privacy issue, we rent a private garden and 1 bed flat and the kitchen is an extension the leads into the garden, there are no curtains or blinds installed in the kitchen (the landlord special) and the scaffolding is literally at the window so there is 0 privacy, it’s then against our bedroom where they are pairing the windows, there also also no curtains installed here - just wooden shutters that don’t sit flush to the wall, so anyone stood outside will have a clear view of the whole bedroom.

Anyway the letting agent replied, apologised for not giving specific dates and said that the work was weather dependent, they didn’t comment on the 24 hours notice and just said they would be carrying out various work over the next 2 weeks. I have since sent a follow up email explaining that I appreciate the work needs to be flexible but asking for 24 hours notice is a reasonable and legal request, I haven’t yet had a reply.

This whole situation is so frustrating and I feel like a bit of a twat for putting up such a fuss about this every time it happens. But I am a female who works from home on my own and I like to know if workmen will be entering the garden on a particular day, as I have had weird experiences of random people coming into our garden for no apparent reason in the past.

Does anyone else have any experiences with this? I’m currently renting in Bath and it’s been a constant battle to receive notice from them.
