Lower Control Arm Bushings and Ball Joints

I bought a set of SPL Lower Control Arm and Shock bushings to install while doing ball joints.

Kind of a PSA, but Advance Auto Parts has a 23 piece ball joint removal kit you can rent that has the correct cups to pull ball joints. Part number 648617. I couldn't find the kit from AutoZone many have recommended over the years.

I also used this ball joint press to press out the control arm bushings and the shock bushing. I had read that you needed a press, but I was able to do it pretty easy with the ball joint press. In my opinion, the ball joint was a bigger pain in the ass than the bushings.

The C-Clamp is a little too small, so you have to do it in 2 steps. Picture 1 is the setup you need to get it started. Get it out as far as you can, then switch to the larger receiver cup to push it the rest of the way out (picture 2). Both receiver cups were from the ball joint press kit, I used a 30mm socket to push out the bushing. It is possible by hand, but an impact is your friend here. Exact same process and size sockets for the shock bushings.

You could probably do this all in one step if you had a socket, or some to receive the bushing that was shorter than what I used in the second picture.

Be sure to check and replace those control arm bushings. My car only has 75k miles and the LCA bushings were absolutely wasted and was actually grinding the control arm on the frame mount. No doubt it was probably causing alignment issues as well.
