Just for context because I don’t think many people can see the differences in ‘million’ vs ‘billion.’
Spirit Airlines is closed now. Seven thousand five hundred jobs disappear. Hundreds of aircraft, routes, and slots at airports. The loan requested to completely bail the company out would have cost HALF A DAY of bombing Iran. Literally, no bombing before lunch.
They needed 500m, and estimates in Iran are placing at $1b per day.
That’s the difference between millions vs billions. I’m not advocating on rescuing with government funds. I’m simply placing a banana (or yellow plane) for scale. Do you think the American jobs or the bombs are more helpful for the country?
EDIT: since I’m getting a lot of replies about how companies should be allowed to fail, etc… do any of you know that the reason this happened is because spirit tried to merge with JetBlue…but then the government stepped in and blocked the merger which cost both companies over a billion dollars and sealed their ultimate fate? They did what they were supposed to do to compete in the capitalist market….the government executed them.
EDIT 2: I know it’s cool to hate on the “crappy airline” because their seats were uncomfortable or whatever. Take a look at the bigger economic picture. Now the ultra low cost carrier is gone. There’s less weight on competition for prices. It will inflate now as you have raised the price averages. Beyond that, the top 3 companies will now eat it all up. All the routes. All the planes. All the slots. And do you think they’ll lower your prices? Now THATS anti-competitive!
