Hey,
I’m building a ~6x2x2 ft (180x60x60 cm) enclosure for a Northern blue tongue skink and thinking about adding a small waterfall with a filtration system.
The idea:
shallow water area in the enclosure
overflow/drain through the bottom (bulkhead) into a small sump in the cabinet below
mechanical + biological filtration + optional UV
return pump pushing water back up to a small waterfall (flowing over rocks)
slow flow, more like gentle circulation than a stream
Main goals:
keep water cleaner without daily changes
create a bit of movement/enrichment
avoid raising overall humidity too much (target ~40–60%)
Concerns:
humidity creeping up
noise/vibration from the pump
waste getting into the system (substrate, feces)
whether it’s just overcomplicating something that should stay simple
Has anyone here tried something similar in a BTS enclosure (or other terrestrial setup)?
Did it work long-term, or did you end up removing it?
Would really appreciate any feedback, especially:
what worked / what didn’t
things you’d do differently
mistakes to avoid
Thanks!
