Last week I was offered a job at a large company. It is an office job. My friend works there and they said the people who interviewed me were excited about bringing me on board. I am fully aware they can revoke the offer at any time. I could tell they liked me because they offered me the job the next day.

Today I received a call because two things were flagged on my background check. I knew this would be an issue but I didn’t think it would be a big issue because the job does not involve driving in any way shape of form. They are giving me the opportunity to write a statement on my behalf. I got a dui three years ago which is a misdemeanor. I got a second dui last year which is a felony class 6. I know I’m an idiot. That’s not why I’m here. Both alcohol related. Never used drugs in my life.

I am in no position to object or contradict the background check. It’s plain as day, black and white. I took a plea deal both times because duh. I no longer drink. I have been sober since the second incident. I wrote explaining both situations. I tried not to dwell on the incidents and didn’t go into great detail. I explained what the courts required me to do as far as probation and alcohol classes. Everything has been smooth in that regard. I do what I’m told when I’m told. I am on probation until next May. I have bimonthly calls with my P.O.

I then went on to a more heartfelt message outlining my recovery and how serious I take it. Second chances and discipline. This is all true. Being sober has been life changing in the best ways possible. I don’t use AA (great program for some but it’s not for me). I simply workout, and make healthier choices. I mentioned all of this and the lovely support system I have. I didn’t mention AA at all in the statement. All in all, the statement amounted to 2 pages 1.5 line spacing. I wanted to keep it brief.

My question is how likely are they to withdraw the offer based on my dumb past decisions? Does anyone else have past experience with something similar? Any suggestions about anything I should include in my statement. I’m sending it to the HR department tomorrow morning.

Thank you
