Hey friends,
I am writing you today after two urologists and an infectious disease doctor have both given up on me.
Here's the situation. Around Octoberish of last year, I had UTI symptoms appear for the first time. As a 30 y/o man, I had never experienced one, so of course I was mortified, and just as I went into urgent care, I got blood in my urine for the first time. They told me it was a UTI and sent me with an antibiotic. I took it for a week, but lo and behold, my symptoms returned. I was given another antibiotic and a referral to the urologist.
I'll fast forward a bit. In February I was put on my 5th antibiotic via a PICC line (an IV line that I had to have in my arm for a whole month). It wasn't exactly an awesome experience. 2 weeks after being on a very strong antibiotic for a month, my symptoms returned once more. I have been given a cystoscopy (camera in your dick for those who were privileged enough to not know that), a CT urogram, a prostate MRI, and a bladder ultrasound. I'm told there is no physical reason whatsoever this should be happening. Everything looks normal.
The only thing that's keeping me afloat right now is D-mannose. I take 2 pills in the morning and 1 in the evening (which equals one full dose). So long as I take D-mannose, no problem, no symptoms. As soon as I get off of it, I'll be peeing blood within 24 hours. I've tested this on more than one occasion. My urine cultures are usually clean so long as I'm asymptomatic, but again, if I stop taking the supplement, there will be E coli in my urine almost immediately. Even when the E coli count is normal, I do still frequently see elevated WBC (white blood cells).
My initial diagnosis was prostatitis, but my most recent urologist told me that if it was prostatitis, we should've seen inflammation on the prostate MRI. Further, it seems to be the opinion of all of my doctors that prostatitis would most likely continue to show in urine exams. So the new conclusion my most recent urologist reached was:
"You do not have an active infection. How do you feel about being on D-mannose for the rest of your life?"
But this just doesn't feel right. If this was going to be the solution I wish I had done it before antibiotics destroyed my guts. Are there any other men dealing with anything like this? I literally haven't been able to find another case like mine. I'm not satisfied with their answer like this is just inevitable. Idk my current course of action is just to stay with the D-mannose for a while and then see if I can eventually get off of it but I'm wondering if anyone else has any solutions.
Sending love to all my UTI homies, this shit sucks.
