Details I remember:

The main character at some point is the only one who can interface with the alien creature (possibly some kind of bug-like creature). I think maybe she(?) can hear the alien speak inside her mind.

The main alien is somewhat outcast from their group. Other bigger/stronger aliens show up on Earth later in the book.

It takes place on Earth.

There is a gaggle of research scientists, possibly studying linguistics.

There is definitely a men-in-black, conspiracy flavor to it. I believe the main character's father (?) was releasing information about the aliens and was written off as a crackpot.
