So in case you haven’t heard, there was a massive fire this morning at NorthC Datacenters in Almere, Netherlands. If you’re in Europe, Middle East, or North Africa and you can’t get into the game right now, that’s why. The fire broke out around 8:30 AM local time, the emergency power system at the facility is reportedly gone, and as of a few hours ago firefighters still hadn’t fully contained it. Not a Moonton issue per se.. the building itself is on fire.
NorthC runs a big chunk of Dutch digital infrastructure. Utrecht University is down, public transport control systems in Utrecht province lost server connectivity, billing platforms across multiple industries.. it’s a wide blast radius. Amsterdam/Netherlands is one of the densest data center corridors in Europe, so when something goes down there, it hits hard.
Here’s where it gets interesting from a technical standpoint though.
When a colocation fire like this happens, the first move is emergency failover.. migrate traffic to a standby node, ideally something geographically redundant. Transdev, a transport company also affected by this same fire, literally had servers in that building that were never moved to a backup location. If a public utility thought that was acceptable, you can bet a gaming company’s MENA/EU cluster wasn’t exactly running textbook multi-region active-active either.
So what does Moonton’s recovery probably look like right now, and what are the security implications? Realistically they’ve got a war room going ..infra lead, network ops, a DBA handling the database restoration, and someone from security who’s probably being overruled on every “let’s slow down and check this” call because the business pressure to restore service is enormous. They’re likely pulling from their last known-good game server snapshot, spinning instances in a Frankfurt or Amsterdam-adjacent AWS/Azure zone, manually verifying account data integrity, and doing a staged rollout.. internal first, then limited region, then full restore. The security review will happen after the fact as a post-mortem, not during. That’s just how incident response works in practice at most companies, including well-resourced ones.
Now here’s the part that actually matters from a security standpoint, because emergency infra migrations like this open up a pretty ugly threat surface.
Misconfigured cloud security groups.. This is the most common one. When you’re rushing, the fastest way to confirm something is working is to temporarily open ports wide. The problem is “temporary” in an incident scenario often means it stays that way for days after the dust settles because nobody circles back. Game servers have management interfaces, internal APIs, admin panels. If those come up even briefly exposed, they’re getting scanned within minutes. Tools like Shodan index new IP ranges constantly and automatically.
Secrets and credentials in the migration pipeline.. Under normal conditions, secrets go through vaults and proper pipelines. Under emergency conditions, engineers pull config files, paste connection strings, hardcode database credentials just to get the service up. Those credentials then live in plaintext in deployment scripts, shell history, sometimes in git commits if someone’s moving fast and not thinking about it. The original environment is physically destroyed so the usual cleanup review never happens.
Backup integrity.. When was the last clean backup actually validated? Moonton’s team will be restoring from snapshot. If that snapshot was never properly tested, they might be restoring corrupted data without knowing it until something breaks in production. Restore processes under pressure also skip integrity verification steps that would normally be standard.
New environment, blind monitoring ..The existing detection rules, anomaly baselines, SIEM tuning.. all of that was built around the old environment’s behavior profile. The new environment starts from zero. Malicious activity in a fresh environment looks like normal setup noise for the first 24-48 hours because there’s no baseline to compare against. You’re essentially flying blind on detection while the whole team is focused on getting matchmaking online again.
DNS and routing cutover window.. During the window where DNS is being updated to point at new infrastructure, there’s a TTL expiry period where traffic is in flux. BGP misconfigurations during rushed re-routing have historically caused traffic to briefly hit unintended destinations. Small window, but it exists.
The real question mark is their DR runbook. If it was actually tested in the last 12 months and they have proper IaC - Terraform, Pulumi, something that rebuilds the environment from code rather than manual clicks.. the new environment could ironically end up more secure than the old one. If they’re doing this from memory and tribal knowledge, it’s going to be messy in ways they won’t fully discover for weeks.
The cause of the fire is still completely unknown by the way. No official statement on what started it. That matters because if it turns out to be a UPS failure during maintenance ..like a nearly identical incident at a German datacenter back in late 2025 .. that tells you something about the physical operational practices at the facility overall.
Bottom line: servers will probably be back up within 24-48 hours. Whether the environment they come back up in is actually secure is a completely separate question that won’t be answered for weeks.
