Hi everyone,
I’m currently a BPT2 in NSW and considering switching to psychiatry.
I have around 5–6 years of internal medicine experience but no formal psychiatry experience yet. My interest in psychiatry is mainly for long-term lifestyle, flexibility, and outpatient work with deep thinking.
I’ve been offered a unaccredited psychiatry position in Sydney , but I’m also thinking about applying directly to accredited training (Victoria/NSW).
I feel conflicted because BPT is a stable accredited pathway and I’m close to finishing, but psychiatry may suit my long-term goals better.
For those who’ve made a similar switch:
Is it realistic to get into psych training without prior experience?
Does doing a unaccredited year significantly improve your chances?
What would you recommend in this situation?
