Now that we know the Man in Yellow can disguise himself as someone living inside the town (hi Sofia 👋), I’ve been going back and thinking about Tilly and I genuinely think the case is stronger than people gave her credit for. We assumed her death was supposed to “put to rest” the theory that she had prior knowledge of the township. But does it? Or did the Man in Yellow just leave after serving the purpose for his visit?
Here’s why I think Tilly WAS the Man in Yellow:
1. She knew Fatima was pregnant before anyone else—including Fatima.
Fatima wasn’t even showing. There was no logical way Tilly could have known. The concept of a grandma just sensing pregnancy seems a little loose for the show’s deep intentionality. She just knocked on her door and casually brought it up like it was obvious. The MIY would absolutely know how Fatima’s story was going to play out. That’s his whole thing. He shows up with a purpose. And I think his purpose as Tilly was to make sure Fatima’s pregnancy storyline followed through. He was there to push it along.
2. The number 47.
Tilly mentions she has 4 kids and 7 grandchildren. 4 and 7. 47. That is NOT a coincidence in this show. There’s been lots of talk surrounding the significance of 47 being a rule of Fromville. We know the town obsessively maintains a population of 47—when population < 47, new arrivals fill the gap. If the population > 47, then someone’s got to go. The MIY operates on the rules of the town. Dropping that number so casually felt like a wink.
3. Her behavior when she arrived.
When everyone got off the bus in the rain, they were scared, confused, trying to find shelter. Tilly was dancing. She was the only one who seemed happy to be there. Almost like she already knew where she was. The show frames this as her being quirky and terminally ill with nothing to lose. But looking back, it reads very differently when you know the MIY infiltrates town by blending in as a new arrival.
4. “Now why would you say that?”
There’s a moment when everyone is barricaded inside the night of the bus arrival. Donna reassures the group by saying something along the lines of “the enemy isn’t in here. It’s outside.” And Tilly’s response is: “Now why would you say that?”
That line was weird. On the surface you could write it off as Tilly being her usual odd self. If Tilly IS the MIY, then she’s literally sitting in that room, and Donna just told everyone they’re safe because the threat is outside. Of course MIY would find that funny. It’s almost like he’s breaking the fourth wall on himself. Maybe that line wasn’t random.
5. The crow during the tarot reading.
When Tilly is doing Fatima’s tarot reading and Fatima asks if her baby is okay then a crow slams through the window.
Crows in this show are signals. They’re there when the trees block the road. They’re at Jim’s funeral. There’s a crow near where the MIY’s jacket was found. And now we’re seeing how connected Sofia/MIY seems to be with that kind of ominous imagery. The crow crashing right at that exact moment, during a reading about the pregnancy the MIY was there to protect—that feels intentional.
6. She kept nudging Fatima toward the pregnancy, even when Fatima was resisting.
Tilly was constantly steering Fatima—the tarot cards, the cravings, the reassurance. And when Fatima ultimately kills her, it’s because Tilly was pushing too hard and Fatima’s body reacted. But here’s the thing: I don’t think the MIY would care about dying once his mission was complete. If he was Tilly, his job was to ensure the pregnancy storyline happened. Once Fatima was deep enough in it that it couldn’t be undone, Tilly had served her purpose. The MIY doesn’t seem particularly attached to any one body.
The counterargument (and why I don’t think it kills the theory):
Tilly’s death “puts to rest” the idea that she had prior knowledge assumes the MIY has to survive to still be the MIY. Season 4 shows us he can move. He was himself, then he’s Sofia. What’s to say he wasn’t Tilly before that?
To be honest, this theory isn’t bulletproof. The biggest problem is that Tilly boarded the bus before it hit the fallen tree, which is what we understand to be the entrance to the town. We also know Sofia encountered the pastor after he’d already hit the tree and turned around.
If Tilly = MIY, then MIY would be capable of “going outside” and beyond the Fromville entrance. If that’s not true, then Tilly may just be a genuine outsider who got pulled in like everyone else. And we know this place operates on rules.
But we’re still learning MIY’s capabilities with each new episode, so I don’t think “he can’t leave town” is confirmed enough to fully kill this theory.
I think the most interesting version of this show is one where we look back and realize the MIY has had a disguise inside the town in every season, not just season 4. And Tilly fits that role too well.
