Specifically, lower power out of saddle efforts in ERG mode. It hurts so much.
I did the "Standing Skills" workout from camp breakthrough this morning and it reminded me how much I hate it when a workout tells me to stand. I have no issues getting out of the saddle on real world rides, it's even fine on the trainer if I'm at sprinting power levels, but when a workout throws a green interval at me and tells me to stand up it's torture. There's no resistance to push against so initially it is very hard to balance, either because I keep spinning fast or I drop the cadence but the flywheel takes 10 seconds to spin down so just reads 0W.
I am eventually able to get a smooth effort going but to do that at the power it asks for means I have to go down to like 30rpm, and then within about 10 seconds my thighs and knees are on fire. Obviously these things are subjective but this feels more severe than a "feel the burn" type of pain, more like "I will injure myself if I keep doing this". The following seated interval is always half a star because my legs are absolutely destroyed and going from 30rpm standing up, to then sitting down means the resistance is through the roof for the first 5 seconds even at lower power. Is this just one of those things that will get better if I keep doing it, or is there some knack to it that I'm missing. Out of ERG much easier as I can just shift way up and crank up the power.
For context I use flat bars, KICKR core v1, and over the past year my weight has fluctuated anywhere between 100 and 150 kg, so perhaps being heavier is a factor. But I've had these issues fairly consistently at both ends of that scale.
