A course in English grammar and syntax
Hello, I wish to ask you guys a question.
Some background. I am an educator, and I have been teaching English for over thirty years. I recently retired. One of the things I used to do was observe my students teaching in schools. Which means, before Covid, I visited many schools to observe and evaluate how my students were teaching their classes. During these visits, I also had the opportunity to see how other English teachers were doing. I noticed something I found rather concerning.
Pupils often asked questions about grammar, and syntax. Teachers usually reply by giving examples of the correct versions of the specific grammatical concept. Most of the time, the pupils would accept the answer, but sometimes, they would press further and ask why one version was correct and why the other was not. That is when some teachers falter. Often, they could not explain why one structure was correct and another was not.
It is not their fault, really. The rules of syntax and grammar can be horrendously difficult, and most people remember very little of them after the examination is over.
Another aspect of this problem is that grammar and syntax references can also be hard to get into, particularly if you are trying to access them all by yourself.
Here is what I plan to do to, perhaps, help with this matter. I plan to offer a grammar course online. Here is how I will run it.
1. The course will be fully online.
2. This course will not have classes. If this first course is well accepted, we may have live online classes in subsequent courses.
3. For each topic, the participant will get.
a. A video to explain the concept of the week. This video will be in Malay to hopefully make it more accessible to everybody.
b. An informative poster that puts the concept onto a one-page poster.
c. A longer text explaining the concept.
