How bad is this really?
Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the long post, but newb here working through newb problems. I'm looking for some guidance on whether I'm SOL, worse than when I started, should be irate or if I'm just not understanding the situation correctly. For context, I got my first PHEV (30+ miles EV range) and definitely do NOT speak electrician.
I hired an electrician to install L2 charging in my garage so I can quickly top up enough to cover all my driving for the day, since I do a lot of coming & going. The interior wall has a dryer so the electrician said they could use that to install an outlet in the garage - I just couldn't run the dryer at the same time the car was charging. Sounded reasonable.
The problem came when I excitedly go to plug in my car and... it doesn't fit. Turns out I have a 10-30 30 amp outlet but a 14-50 charger and in going down the rabbit hole of trying to find a solution it seems like what I got installed was... really bad maybe?? As in the only duct tape solution is to buy a whole new charger that isn't quiiite safety rated (is Tesla Mobile Connect w/10-30 adapter the best option?) and worst case I have a not up to code, illegally installed outlet that potentially busted through some kind of fire rated walls and will electrocute me, fry the car and/or burn my house down while my insurance cites user error when denying any claims? I went back to the electrician and I was told there are 10-30 plug chargers I can get on Amazon that will work. No answer as to whether the outlet can be converted to have a ground or a different kind of outlet, whether I can leave the charger plugged in without issue, etc. At this point I'm not sure I should trust their advice further so I'm trying to figure out as much as I can on my own.
I gather the sharing with the dryer has something to do with splitting, but being as I don't have anything other than just a 10-30 wall outlet (no digital panel or switches), it isn't the "safest of the unsafe" ways to go about it and negates any erm.. neutral/ground/main/essentially alright electrospeak I don't quite understand possibility? TLDR - the worst part of all this.
The outlet does seem to have full contact points which I understand is good, the Tesla Mobile Connect with the 10-30 adapter should keep things at the correct 24amp level and has a temperature sensor which would also be good, the car doesn't have much EV range so I wouldn't be charging it for anything more than short periods of time while I'm home and awake - but am I right in thinking that I'm better off just pretending like I never had this done (until I can undo it)? If it were an easier option I would just have a dedicated outlet installed, but that will be an expensive tear the house up route that I won't be able to do anytime soon.
Is there anything I'm missing? Am I justified in being pissed that the only limitation mentioned was the drying/charging at the same time? Any use of electrical for dummies language and any specific product solutions, if they exist, would be much appreciated. Thanks for helping understand this frustrating mess.
