About three days ago my father passed away from cancer. His estate is almost nothing of value, a couple run down vehicles, no money (I was financially supporting him toward the end), no property, and almost no items of value.

The complicated part of this is that my father never filed his income taxes. He was a contractor for Amazon and likely owes a LOT of money. It is a priority for myself and the rest of my family to not be accidentally sucked into the responsibility of filing his outstanding taxes and reconciling his debts. He had no will. I’m 32 years old.

After looking into this a little bit, I’m not sure how exactly to proceed. We’re sorting out the funeral home (and likely aren’t eligible for the $2500 death fund thing that people get), but I haven’t cancelled any cards or paid any bills, and am making sure no money in the account is touched. I’m planning on getting in contact with the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC, who can handle these responsibilities, but apparently they can decline to act if the total value of the estate is less than roughly $3500, which I believe it is.

I just want to sort out the required responsibilities, let family members take what items they’d like from his few belongings, and let this pass without incriminating anyone. We’d be royally screwed if any of us “intermeddled” and are ordered to reconcile his accounts.

What should I do?
