obviously its okay to not want to ship things or like shipping. and i am NOT hating on those who do. but I think the idea that shipping is ruining fandoms is silly. especially when you CANNOT have a fandom without shipping.

shipping has been apart of fandom culture since the 60s, where people were writing star trek gay fanfics. it is not a new concept and its not gonna go away anytime soon.

every complaint/argument i see about shipping is the most nothingburger issue ever as well. like if someones harassing people, or shipping incest or pedophile shit then yeah thats bad. but most of the time it'll be the most tame ship ever and people will be like "erm.. that doesn't make any sense tho..." like okay?? why does that matter? shipping is supposed to be for fun. people like to explore interesting dynamics between characters, or they like drawing characters making out. thats cool too.

i also find it weird that a lot of the criticism towards shipping is usually directed at queer ships. I rarely see ships between a man and a woman get hate, but the second its two guys are making out its a huge issue.

"but this character is straight!!" (when it has never been stated so)

"cant two guys be friends anymore?" (they can. just because you interpret two characters relationship as platonic doesn't mean others can't interpret it as romantic.)

"but the author said they were just friends!!" (as long as they aren't harassing the author i don't see any issues with them drawing ship art?)

(i also see this a lot when people headcannon a character to be queer, but thats beside the point.)

and in the end, if shipping does truly bother you that much. just block people who do participate in shipping. block people who post ship art or tags about ship art. find a space where people also don't care about shipping or dislike it. don't join a fanbase and then get upset when you find out people are shipping things, thats silly.
