Trouble figuring out how to install a water softener.

I just moved into a house on city water, which is sourced from deep water wells. No treatment besides disinfection. So the water is incredibly hard.

I'd like to install a softener, but the water supply to the house is nowhere near a drain. My plumber recommended a Nuvo to be installed for about $2600. Plus filter replacements every 6 months at $200 per. Seemed pretty steep, and reviews don't fill me with confidence.

Essentially the plumber is saying it could be about $6k all said and done to install a traditional softener, not including cosmetic work.

So I just had a hairbrained idea for softener install and I need a sanity check. Water supply valve is in the basement adjacent to the garage. What if I routed the supply into the garage and installed the softener there? I would need to install a sump pump in a bucket for the brine, but then I could route the waste line up through the attic and tee into the nearest vent stack. Thoughts? Is that allowed?

I'm trying to avoid cutting out copious amounts of drywall.

Or the do nothing option, and just paying for replacement appliances more frequently.
