Something I noticed late night grocery shopping

I'm asking out of curiosity and just honestly wondering because I didn't see it much previously.

Due to work hours changing, I've been doing my grocery shopping late at night usually between 9pm and 10pm and I'm surprised how many families I see there.

I'm talking the whole family and their kids, it was a bit shocking seeing kids under 10 (on a school night) there so often late at night.

I don't want to be judgmental, but what's going on, is it cultural thing?

Where do I start?

Where does a casual reader start when it comes to the classics, particularly interested in becoming more acquainted with the foundational texts of history across Mesopotamia, Near East, Greeks & Rome.

Is there a chart or reading plan to show the recommended journey through history and perhaps the recommended translations for each book?

The Marriage of Two Lights [Hadith to commemorate the blessed wedding date of Amir ul-Momineen (as) and Lady Fatima al-Zahra (as)

زواج النورين — The Marriage of the Two Lights

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:

"I am but a mortal like you — I arrange marriages among you and I am given in marriage among you — except for Fatima, for her marriage descended from Heaven."

First family trip in Tasmania, some advice please

Hi everyone,

Hoping to do our first family trip In Tassie around Spring (Octoberish), we are a family of 4 from Melb with a 3.5 year old and 9 month old.

I'm in 2 minds either:

  • Hire a campervan comfortable for the family going from Hobart up the east coast towards Bay of Fires
  • Hire 4WD and organise more traditional motel/hotel stays

I haven't really done a trip like this before and pretty excited to do so but not sure which route to go and do, hoping to do ~10 days or so in this trip.

Thanks

Aus engineers, what's going on with local council pay?

Feeling totally burnt out at work, land dev civil engineer with ~10YOE and the general advice here is to look at local/municipal engineering as a career move.

I'm making $160k (AUD) in my role and a senior development engineer at most local council in Victoria are at $100-110k?

Even the team lead is ~120k, this is absolutely preposterous.

Not even sure what the play is anymore, genuinely feel stuck here.

Question about scripture interpretation

I have a question about the Christian traditions of how scripture is interpreted & understood.

I come from a Sufi minor sect of Islam where interpretation of the Quran (and parts of the NT) is a mix of esoteric & exoteric, there are parts that can be only explained through esoteric lens (allegories, symbolism, mysticism) and some that are exoteric (laws, commandments).

I've always wondered how it is conducted in different Christian traditions and who has the "authority" to perform the interpretations?

Thank you and God bless

There is nothing more important that Wilayat Amir ul-Moimineen (as)

Translation:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

>“O Ali, if a servant worshipped Allah — Mighty and Majestic — for as long as Noah remained among his people, and possessed gold equal to Mount Uhud which he spent in the way of Allah, and his life was prolonged until he performed pilgrimage for a thousand years on foot, then he was killed unjustly between Safa and Marwa, yet did not take you as his wali (guardian/master), he would not smell the fragrance of Paradise, nor would he enter it.”

What's the emergency room like in your country?

Just spent 7 hours in the emergency room for an urgent (but not life threatening) visit in Melbourne, Australia.

The average wait for non-critical emergency is around ~4 hours here and it got me wondering, what's the emergency room wait in your country?

Compare only less urgent emergency visits because critical visits are less than 10 minutes here.

I'll keep this nice and brief

The importance of public transport cannot be understated, it provides efficient mass transit of people, it's sustainable, scalable, and critically important to the economic & social value of a city and state.

Public transport can be unsafe however, you're boxed in with nowhere to go and vulnerable demographics (children, women, minorities) are victims of these crimes.

We want to encourage and protect public transportation systems and users and provide the harshest deterrence against these crimes, I propose tripling of the punishment for violent crimes committed on public transport, I would also support increasing the punishment or fines for petty crimes like littering or causing major delays (intentionally).

It would be much easier and cheaper than mass security/police upgrades and scaling up and I'm certain it will create a much better public transport environment.

I work at a small design consultancy, we had 2 senior designers leave this year and had 2 vacancies open, the roles were advertised and I was hopeful we would hire new engineers to replace.

Then my boss drops it on me that they're going to pivot from hiring and look to offshore the roles to Asia, I was pretty shocked as this was the first time they've ever mentioned offshoring.

I'm extremely bearish on this strategy, I came from a major consultancy previously where offshoring was a disaster to work with, ton of rework, communication barriers etc.

Is it jump ship time?

Hi everyone,

Looking for a print shop that does book binding services.

I have several PDFs in foreign language that aren't available in print anymore that I wish to print and bind in a book format.

Happy to drive around Melbourne for a local business, thanks!

I'd like to get a general gauge on how much civil engineers enjoy their work, I'm feeling totally alienated in my day to day job as a design engineer in Land Dev.

Greenfield estates with local council standards, I don't feel like an engineer, I just input the data into Civil3D and produce some drawings while on my desk.

10 years in, I'm hoping to be something more because I feel like at some stage my job will either be done by somebody overseas for 1/3rd of the pay or by some form of AI tool in Civil3D & a junior engineer.

Salam wa'alaykom

I found myself reflecting on this verse for the entire weekend, how convenient it must have been so many of us to be born into this beautiful religion of Islam under the Wilayah of Amir ul-Momineen (as).

But be truthful to yourself, how many of us would be in this position if we weren't born into it? How many of us would have the wisdom & courage to seek and follow the Haqq?

Our scholars tell us that the path of Ahlul-Bayt (as) is the Sirat al-Mustaqeem (straight path, Quran 1:6), how many of us can defend why we follow this path against all self-doubts and external criticisms.

This was a true reminder for me to never stop seeking knowledge and learning about our beautiful path.

May Allah (swt) bless you all in this journey.
