Okay so my journey into deftones continues, after loving white pony for years and discovering diamond eyes and the perfection of KNY recently i decided to listen to Saturday Night Wrist.

My first impression is how impressive that they are exploring and evolving their sound so much i mean this album is very much shoegaze, different from the thickness and riff heavy KNY, it reminds me of smashing pumpkins and slowdive if that makes sense, and thats definitely a sound that i love yet it still feels very much Deftones

My tracks reviews:

Hole in the earth - a riff that engraves itself in your brain, incredible vocals here, perfect start

Rapture- a screaming chino song, reminds me a lot of Poltergeist from KNY, however unlike the former this one has an inspired bridge and chorus, wasted potential here imo, forgettable

Beware- damn. Haunting and dark. When it drops in the “beware the water” part, so cathartic and so satisfying. this part is what deftones is to me. Gets better with every listen. Deep cut that hits hard

Cherry waves- can see why this is the biggest song from the album. Definitely because of the “yououou should stay down beneath”, its insanely catchy and good, shoegazy greatness. The verses in this are mid though imo

Mein- swerve city vibes on the opening riff. Its nice. Has much more potential. lets be real here guys, from a collab between chino and serj i expected wayyy more (think about passenger for example) So overall good song but feels a little lazy to me and unfinished.

UURL interlude- i actually think its really awesome. Like really awesome. Kinda sucks chino doesnt sing on this and it wasnt developed to a song.

Feels like im walking in a forest at night. Reminds me of radiohead so much, sounds like it would fit on hail to the theif. Im not skipping it

Xerces- solid ballad, i can definitely see how this could be someone favorite, its nice but doesnt have that deftones twist. That “ill be waving goodbye” is not memorable for me, feel like this could have been made by another band

Ratsratsrats- wtf. this breaks the flow of the album, very weird choice to include this in this project. Like rusty daggers to the ears, into the bin with this one

Pink cellphone - i realized after i listened to this that this is like an infamous “worst deftones song ever” which i really understand why, mainly because of the last spoken word part. But i really liked it actually lol. I love trip hop and this has massive attack written all over it. I wish i could cut the annoying “butt fucking” monologue at the end, and this will be pretty good imo.

Combat- “which side are you on?????” I liked it a lot. classic screaming chino but this has a good riff, memorable lines and good soft chorus, unlike the previous screaming chino tracks on here. Favorite aggressive song from this project

Kimdracula- wow. Unexpected greatness on the back end of this. How was this not a single? One of the best deftones riffs. Such a hybrid and fluid song, screams and softness, raw and processed. Thick riff on the breakdown at the end. Perfection.

Riviere- first half too slow for my taste, second half is koy no yokan style at its finest and im here for it. Solid closer.

Overall an incredible album. very high highs and some very low lows (rats thats you) Maybe 4 skips for me, and many songs im going to play back over and over.

Favourite has to be Kimdracula, but Beware comes very close, followed by hole in the earth.

Ok so ive been listening to white pony for years, idk why i havent listened to another deftones album cuz white pony is a masterpiece. My two favorite bands of all time are radiohead and tool, and im always searching for albums that can scratch that same magical itch of euphoric dark heavy complex music.. its a tough search though

Recently i thought to dive in to deftones a bit more and listened to Diamons Eyes.

It was a good album, the opener, beauty school, sextape are amazing and a few more decent tracks, not a perfect album but good enough to keep me going.

So after diamond eyez i picked Koi No Yokan, and holy shit. Holy shit.

i cant remember the last time i discovered something this great. its a headbanging masterpiece i think i severed my spine halfway through. No skips on this album for me

Leathers is a song that on first listen i thought ‘WTF is this jumpscare shit, but i guess the shedding your skin part is cool’

Second listen is “ok this is pretty great”

Third listen “your cutting all ties NOW AND FOREVER”

And now its my all time favorite deftones song. What a masterpiece.

Every time i see something about deftones its usually white pony or around the fur, idk why this masterpiece flows under the radar

Simple rhythms, heavy thick guitars mixed beautifully, catchy choruses, memorable vocal melodies and epic peaks. Only mid track is graphic nature and i love it too

Anyways so just came here to share the love. Im wondering what album to listen to next? Is there something that is similar to this in style?

I tried listening to around the fur and had to stop after the first song cuz chino started screaming at me ‘shove it shove it shove it…’ and.. yeah.. not to crap on somebody’s favourite song here but respectfully its not for me (sick riff though)

If you have suggestions for deftones album or other albums with a similar sound to KNY ill gladly take it cuz im hooked now and i need the next fix
