My boyfriend with epilepsy was told to not start the carnivore diet by his doctor but is starting it anyways.
My boyfriend is about to be 27 and he struggled with epilepsy his whole life. His mom told me it was very hard to find a medication that would work for him, but the medication he’s on has been working for him since he was 18. Recently, he has gained some weight, but he doesn’t look overweight he just has a belly now. He doesn’t exercise he doesn’t go to the gym and he usually just lays in bed all day after work.
He has recently been complaining about his weight and I told him that he should start going to the gym and that we would go together. He explained to me that he does not need to go to the gym because it’s fishing season and fishing is a physical activity that will help him lose weight.
He went to the doctor about this and told her that he was planning on fishing as his physical activity to lose weight, and she laughed at him and told him that it was not going to help him at all. I asked her about the carnivore diet because he keeps trying to go on it and she said it is not a good idea for his epilepsy because he has been having problems lately. He has been possibly having seizures in his sleep.
Last week he brought up that he wanted to start the carnivore diet and that he knows more than his doctor because “he did his own research”. This is the same man who thought that fishing would help him lose weight in his stomach and won’t go to the gym. I explained to him that his doctor said it was a bad idea because he was right there when she did and he claimed he didn’t remember talking about that.
I explained to him that he is not a doctor and he does not know more than his doctor, and he looked me dead in my face and said “I am a doctor and I do know more than her”. Later on when we talked about it in the car, he went on to say that he needs a male doctor that understands male problems.. he has a degree in nothing so he is NOT a doctor btw.
At this point, I really don’t know what to do. I know it is horrible for him to go on this diet. The doctor said it was horrible for him to go on this diet. His epilepsy has been a lot worse and we don’t know what is wrong with his body. His liver does not work half of the time and he has to take liver medication. How am I supposed to explain to him that it is a horrible idea when he won’t even listen to his doctor.
