I’m raising this as a serious concern, not a rant.

I’ve made over $30K on Upwork, and a close friend of mine has crossed $300K. We’ve both been active for years and understand how to win jobs.

But since around 2022, something feels fundamentally different.

Our profile visibility and proposal performance have dropped drastically — despite improving our skills, portfolio, and positioning.

What’s more concerning is this:

When I search for services in my niche, I consistently see:

  • The same profiles dominating the first 10+ pages
  • Many experienced freelancers (including myself) not appearing at all
  • Profiles with less history sometimes ranking higher

This raises some uncomfortable but important questions:

  • How exactly does Upwork rank freelancers in search?
  • Has visibility shifted toward certain regions, new profiles, or boosted accounts?
  • Is there a hidden tier system that limits exposure for some freelancers?
  • Why is there zero transparency on how search ranking actually works?

I’m not claiming anything — I’m asking for clarity.

Because when you’ve already proven results ($30K+, $300K+) and suddenly your visibility drops like this, it doesn’t feel like just “more competition.”

It feels like something changed under the hood.

Would love to hear from other long-term freelancers:

  • Have you noticed a drop since 2022?
  • Are you still getting consistent profile impressions?
  • Do you show up in search results for your main keywords?

Let’s discuss this openly — because right now, the system doesn’t feel transparent at all.
