Nail trimming advice
Hi everyone, looking for some advice about nail trimming for my dog.
He’s a 6-year-old American/British Bulldog mix, around 40 kg. I rescued him when he was just a week old and raised/trained him myself. He’s honestly an amazing dog — super smart, fast learner, very compliant, gentle, and has always had great behavior.
Around age 4, he developed atopic dermatitis. It mostly affected his back (hair loss) and especially his paws, where he got irritated, painful skin patches. With our vet’s help, food changes, meds, etc., it’s mostly under control now.
But since then, he absolutely HATES nail trims.
He becomes extremely scared — runs away, growls, panics. He’s not aggressive at all and has never bitten anyone, but he’s terrified. He’s also generally a very sensitive/scared dog despite being big.
I’ve tried different styles of nail clippers, nail grinders/Dremels, scratch boards/nail filing boards
Nothing has really worked. He hates having his paws touched, and mostly ignores the boards.
Unfortunately we live in a very small community, so professional groomers aren’t really available, and honestly I don’t want to put him through more stress unless absolutely necessary.
Has anyone dealt with something similar, especially after painful skin issues? Any advice, training approaches, tools, calming methods, or experiences that helped your dog would be really appreciated.
Thank you!
