Sunlight glowed behind pine and cedar leaves. A brook babbled sweetly, harmonizing with the singing birds. In the distance, a woodpecker was pecking the side of a tree.
I saw what looked like a displaced piece of city sidewalk next to the gravel trail I was walking on.
I felt the urge to jump on the concrete like I was a character from a 3D platforming video game. Stepping up onto the platform, I crouched down, closed my eyes and made a big jump.
Instead of the feeling of hard cement beneath my feet, I landed on off-white carpet. My knees buckled and I heard a concerning pop from my ankles. I staggered for a bit, before getting back to my feet.
Stale air invaded my nostrils. The sound of poorly maintained air conditioners and buzzing fluorescent lights battered my ears.
I had to find a way out.
I took my pocket knife, and carved an X into the wall.
As I continued forward, I began to notice “landmarks.” A cracked fluorescent light sparked. A yellowed outlet making concerning noises. A damp spot in the carpet that seemed to get darker.
After hours of walking, I saw the mark I made.
