I have a 6th grader who age wise should be a 7th grader but was held back a year in elementary school. He is not ready for 6th grade. He tries. He puts in the work. I work with him during study hall and during class. His parents hired a tutor for him. The fact remains he is still making simple mistakes like needing reminders of when to capitalize, writing incomplete sentences, and struggling to write more than five sentences about any given topic. His classmates are turning in 5 paragraph essays. Even with help he turns in things like: "I like cats and dogs they are both pets. they both have four legs. And hunt. I want To have a cat someday."
And that's it. The entire assignment. I'm working with him and admin wants to know what I'm doing to support him, but frankly there's no way to grade level or even a grade behind. It would be one thing if he didn't care and didn't try, but he cares, he tries, and it breaks my heart to see him struggle and not be able to help.
Any advice?
