What are advantages of articulated cheek flaps?

Cheek guards help protecting the wearers face and side of head. Which is why many helmets had some. My question is what is the advantage of articulated cheek flaps over cheek guards that are part of the helmet.

I believe that having the articulation makes that part of the head less protected.

Articulation also seems to be somewhat difficult to manufactur.

So what could be the advantages of having articulated cheek flaps.

Did helmets always have chinstraps?

On modern helmets a chinstrap is very common to ensure the helmet stays on the wearers head. And I know that there were historical helmets that were secured with chin straps, but with bigger helmets that also cover the chin and neck area is also covered by the helmet so a chinstrap wouldn't be visible. So my question is were there helmets without chinstraps and if so were they secured with other systems or could they just be grabbed and pulled up without any additional security.
