So I’ve been watching Love Island (UK, US, AUS, BTV) for a decade now, and I know posts like this pop up all the time. I’m still saying it anyway because I think we always need a reminder.

Watching BTV, Amaya, Hannah, and Iris were doing a lot when it came to the guys. At times, their dynamic was* *exclusionary. That part is fair to call out.

What’s not fair is how quickly people start throwing around “mean girls” like it’s a diagnosis. The need to assign one group as villains and another as fragile victims feels less like observation and more like projection. It’s this parasocial urge to find someone to “protect” and someone to “punish,” and it’s getting weird.

And honestly, it’s starting to ruin reality TV. The constant moral-policing is making contestants come in hyper-aware, overly managed, and scared to be themselves because they know one wrong moment can get them “canceled.” People will say “please don’t bring influencers, cast regular people!” yet most of those people are more susceptible to self-preservation because they go on these shows for exposure and want to build a platform. So they perform in a way they think we as viewers will like to get there, which is just inauthentic and so not entertaining.

Take Hannah’s Pepe confrontation. Was it annoying? Sure. Cringe? Absolutely. Worth “canceling” her over? Please be so serious. If every messy or uncomfortable moment becomes grounds for outrage, what exactly are we expecting to watch here? A conflict-free villa where everyone behaves perfectly? That’s not reality TV, I’m sorry. If what you’re looking for is a clean narrative where the “bad guys” always get humbled and the underdog prevails, I urge you to watch Nickelodeon or Disney Channel reruns.

Reality TV has never been that. It’s always been messy, chaotic, and dare I say uncomfortable. Shows blew up in the first place because people were allowed to be unfiltered, and viewers could watch, judge, and move on without turning it into a full-on moral crusade. Think about Real Housewives or Dance Moms — if they were running today you guys would’ve canceled Abby Lee or Porsha and we’d never get the reality TV gold that we have today (granted Abby may not be the best example because she was, you know, her…).

TLDR: ease up on the morality Olympics and let the show be what it is. No Stan wars, no labeling, just watch and then GO TOUCH SOME GRASS! Please don’t let this summer be a repeat of last year’s season. Y’all are truly ruining it.
